What the figures say.
According to a survey by IFOP (the French public opinion institute) available here
1 in 2 French people would be in favor of a regulated market with “strong public intervention and the maintenance of certain prohibitions”, notably prohibition while driving, in public places or for minors. The association adds: ” What’s more, the French readily acknowledge the positive effects of such a reform (increased tax revenues, product quality, strengthening of the fight against the illegal market and trafficking…). And, while they fear that it will lead to the trivialization of cannabis use, they no longer fear that it will encourage a loss of moral values or the consumption of other drugs.”
More than four out of five French people were in favor of “controlled medical use, on prescription, in the treatment of certain illnesses”,
Last but not least, more people now find tobacco more dangerous than cannabis (82% vs. 78%). Quite paradoxical, given that the former is generally used to consume the latter. Alcohol, on the other hand, is considered only slightly less dangerous (77%).
