Cannabis fragrances: explanations, recipes and selection

For some years now, the perfume industry has been exploring the olfactory fields associated with cannabis. In beautiful bottles, but without the intoxication, they offer us stunning fragrances. Zeweed has turned its nose up at these “prodweed derivatives” to reveal their little secrets and good essences.

As public acceptance of marijuana grows, regardless of the legislation, perfume manufacturers have been digging deep in their nostrils for the past few years to find cannabic aromas that are sexier than the smell of fine joint or a whiff of bong water. Gone are the days of stoner schlock: weed is now chic and shocking. Gone, too, are the days of spraying Febreze, Air Wick or Dyptique to mask the smell of weed wafting into the parental or marital apartment.
From now on, smoking kills, but doesn’t stink.
Or more.
On the market, two types of cannabis-related fragrances share sales in this new niche.

The first, older type contains no cannabis and is designed to mask the smell of the blunt and other five-leaf OCBs you and your friends have slipped on. Just to keep up good relations with your neighbors, roommates… or parents, if you’ve opted for Tanguy-style apartment living, it’s a good idea to dress up the smoky air with a bouquet that smells good and is designed for the situation.
The cache-ganja flavor is popular in places where weed is still illegal, and is, cannabic revolution obliges, sold less and less.

The second, the one we’re interested in, is made from real cannabis.
Because beyond smelling good (see our selection) the ganja parfum is a big step towards the normalization of cannabis, one more stone added to the edifice of cannabis-culture, which has become Main Stream after being reviled for almost fifty years.
While more and more of us want to adopt nutritional supplements (CBD), calling for legislation authorizing the use of recreational cannabis we are also legion. Legion of consumers want the cosmetics industry to further explore the product possibilities offered by cannabis
While weed perfume adds a note of gaiety and beauty to the cosmetics industry, in some countries, wearing it is more of a manifesto than a claim. A certain smell of freedom that’s starting to make itself felt.

THE DYI of ganja perfume.

To make perfume at home, a few explanations are in order:

First, we need to understand how perfume is made in general. Perfume is made up of four main ingredients: essential oils, a base oil, ethanol and spring water. Essential oils are divided into three categories: top notes, middle notes and base notes (not to be confused with the base oil). Top notes evaporate the fastest, while base notes evaporate the slowest. When you wear perfume, all three notes are active first, with the top notes taking center stage. As they evaporate, the heart notes become dominant, followed by the base notes. Many perfumers also use transitional notes, which facilitate the link between the different notes.

You need a few top notes (fragrances), then heart and base notes, as well as transition notes. If you’re trying to reproduce the smell of cannabis without actually using cannabis, you’ll need to carefully blend the right notes to achieve the desired aroma. And the smell of cannabis can occupy a different note depending on the terpene profile: pine, citrus, juglandaceae (walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds…) vegetable, mineral and the way they are positioned in relation to other oils.

Once you’ve chosen your essential oils, add them to the base oil – usually sweet almond oil or jojoba oil. You should generally use about 7 drops of each of the top, middle and base notes, in about 14 grams of oil. Then add about 70 grams of ethanol (vodka will do) and seal the mixture in an airtight container. Leave to stand for between 48 hours and 6 weeks. The longer you leave it, the stronger the scent. Once ready, add a few tablespoons of spring water, mix well and strain through a coffee filter. Add a tablespoon of glycerine to preserve the fragrance. Then store your perfume in an amber-colored glass bottle.

To obtain the perfect cannabis fragrance, the ingredients must be of the highest quality. Once you’ve observed the recipe, all you need to do is bottle your version of Vetivert or Chanel n°420.
