A recent study on the efficacy of CBD as a painkiller has just been hailed by former President Bill Clinton, who sees the results as“a very promising avenue” to help the United States emerge from the health crisis linked to opioid abuse. In 20 years, this crisis has claimed the lives of over a million Americans.
The clinical trial, conducted by researchers at NYU Langone Health (New York State) and Baptist Health of Jacksonville (Florida State), demonstrated that an orally absorbed cannabidiol (CBD) tablet“safely managed pain after minimally invasive surgery and produced no side effects“.
To reach this conclusion, the researchers followed 99 volunteers over 18 and under 75 for two weeks. One group received a placebo and the other CBD taken orally. Both groups received a decreasingly low dose of Percocet to wean them off opiates in favor of CBD. The 99 patients were asked to take placebo or CBD 3 times a day for 14 days after surgery.
CBD as effective as low-dose opiates.
On the first day after surgery, patients receiving CBD experienced on average 23% less pain than those receiving placebo. Underlining that in patients with moderate pain, CBD had a significant effect.
A second analysis also showed that patients receiving 50 mg CBD reported less pain than those receiving placebo. No major side effects were reported in patients receiving CBD.
The study results were presented in March at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) 2022 Annual Meeting in Chicago.
On Monday July 11, the company behind the study TR Processing stated in a press release that Bill Clinton“had followed the study through the Clinton Foundation”.
100,000 Americans to die of opioid overdose by 2021
The former White House tenant sees these results as a promising way of reducing opioid dependence.
While these same opiates are claiming more and more victims TR Processing (citing data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) pointed out in the same spirit that“more than 100,000 Americans died from drug overdoses in 2021 and one million lives were lost to overdoses over the past two decades“.
Beyond the tragic human toll, thisopioid crisis is costing the United States over $1,000 billion a year. The legalization of CBD at the federal level in 2018 could well enable the country to emerge from the biggest health crisis it has ever experienced, along with that of Covid-19.
