Hanna Liakhava, a 25-year-old Belarusian woman, was sentenced on May 2, 2019, to 8 months in prison after being found guilty of bringing 0.1 grams of marijuana to Bali.
Hanna Liakhava is a photographer on assignment in Bali. During her stay, she was accused of violating Indonesia’s extremely strict drug laws.
The verdict was accepted by the guilty party and her defense. According to some reports, Liakhava apparently couldn’t hold back her tears after she left the courtroom.
Liakhava was arrested on October 14 at Bali’s Ngurah Rai international airport.
Immigration officers said her anxious behavior while filling out a simple customs declaration form had aroused their suspicions.
Customs officers then directed Liakhava into an examination room where they discovered a small bag of leaves and marijuana, stored in two small plastic tubes.
According to an article published by the Bali Post, Liakhava declared that she had been smoking cannabis since the age of 14 and that she had bought the weed with which she was caught during her vacation in Spain, during September 2018.
After Spain, she travelled to Shanghai, apparently without any problems.
A few days later, on her arrival in Bali where her plan was simply to combine vacation and photographic work, she was arrested and convicted…
